Risk arising when turnover, income, tax liability, or business activity reported in ITR differs materially from GST returns. It prompts reconciliation and deeper income verification.
ITR-GST Variance Risk appears when income-tax returns and GST filings tell materially different stories about the borrower’s business. In MSME underwriting, both data sources are important: ITR reflects declared income and profitability, while GST returns reflect taxable outward supplies and compliance behaviour. A meaningful mismatch may arise from exempt sales, timing differences, non-GST income, accounting treatment, or genuine reporting errors. For example, high GST turnover with low income in ITR may require margin analysis and expense verification, while low GST activity with high claimed sales may require explanation. This risk matters because inconsistent disclosures reduce confidence in assessed cash flows. The caution is to reconcile before judging; not every variance is negative, but every material variance needs a documented reason.
