Risk that borrower-provided financial information is incomplete, poorly understood, unsupported, or inconsistent with source documents. It affects confidence in appraisal and repayment assessment.
Knowledge Gap in Financial Disclosure arises when the borrower, promoter, or finance team cannot properly explain the submitted financial information. In MSME underwriting, this can happen when accounts are prepared externally, records are weak, cash transactions are high, or management does not track profitability and liabilities closely. For example, a promoter may submit financial statements but be unable to explain major receivables, unsecured loans, or margin changes. This gap matters because repayment assessment depends on reliable and understood financial data. It does not always mean manipulation, but it reduces confidence and may require additional verification. The common caution is to seek clarifications, ledgers, GST data, bank statements, auditor notes, and management explanations before relying on the numbers.
